CHICAGO – Thanks to money secured by State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. through the Rebuild Illinois capital program, $40 million is coming to the area to attract new businesses and spur more economic growth in Chicago’s South Side, as well as secure new jobs for the surrounding communities.

“We talk about the rising tide lifting all boats, and the work we are doing to put Illinois on the right financial path is allowing local communities to thrive economically because of those efforts,” said State Senator Elgie Sims, Jr. (D-Chicago).

The $40 million available grant will supercharge the development of megasites -- large, developed sites ready for occupancy for manufacturers, distribution centers, industrial centers, and more. Grants are available ranging from $250,000 to $5 million, and underserved areas will be prioritized.

SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Javier Cervantes is happy to announce that the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has awarded grants to 48 communities in need of lead service line replacements, including a $40,000 grant for the Village of Lyons and $40,000 for the Village of Stickney.

“We need to prioritize clean drinking water being available to all communities,” said Cervantes (D-Chicago). “These funds will be utilized to identify and create a plan to repair lead service lines within our area.”

The Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act requires owners and operators of community water supplies in Illinois to submit a complete water service line material inventory for the Illinois EPA’s approval no later than April 15, 2024. The complete inventory must report the composition of all service lines within the CWS’s distribution system.

We need to ensure our board is made up of trustees that will make decisions to protect the rights of our students, faculty and staff.”

New Cunningham law promotes sustainable energy

SPRINGFIELD – With a looming power shortage on the grid, Illinois received a major boost to its renewable energy sector thanks to a law sponsored by State Senator Bill Cunningham.

"There is an energy shortage in Illinois right now, and it is causing uncertainly, which leads prices to spike and potentially future brownouts," said Cunningham, a Democrat who represents portions of Chicago and the Southwest Suburbs. "This legislation will help solve that problem by expanding renewable energy opportunities."

Sims leads sound fiscal decisions resulting in payoff of Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund debt

CHICAGO – State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. — the Senate’s chief budget negotiator — led efforts that allowed Illinois to repay the remaining $1.36 billion unemployment insurance Trust Fund debt.

Halpin announces more than $3 million coming to Macomb

MACOMB – With the support of State Senator Mike Halpin, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced the City of Macomb will receive $3.25 million to improve transportation as part of the historic Rebuild Illinois capital program.

"In order for the City of Macomb and WIU to grow, we need to make proper investments in infrastructure," said Halpin (D-Rock Island). "Macomb is a great place to live and work. I will continue to push the state to properly fund transportation services."

SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Mike Halpin will serve as chair of the Senate Higher Education Committee and Representative Gregg Johnson will serve on the House Labor and Commerce Committee for the 103rd General Assembly.

“I will work to not only protect higher education funding, but look to make increases where we can,” said Halpin (D-Rock Island). “We need to make sure that the tremendous higher education institutions in Western Illinois and across the state retain and recruit more in-state residents.”

WESTERN SPRINGS – State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton is partnering with Metropolitan Family Services DuPage to host “#LovePurse” donation drives for local women in need.

“Love Purse gives survivors of domestic violence the products and care they need,” Glowiak Hilton (D – Western Springs) said. “This event gives our community the ability to rise up and help women with the challenges they often face alone.”

The “#LovePurse” movement collects new purses that are filled with personal care items, toiletries, menstrual products, and notes of encouragement to distribute to women in need and survivors of domestic violence. Members of the community are asked to purchase a purse and fill it with the requested products. Residents should take these products to the drop off locations throughout their communities.

AURORA – Thanks to a $500,000 investment acquired by State Senator Karina Villa, construction and building trades apprenticeships will be expanded in the 25^th Senate District.

“The expansion of the Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship programs will bring more opportunities to Aurora residents and boost the number of jobs in the area,” said Villa (D-West Chicago). “Growing job opportunities in the building trades will not only help individuals, but will help to build and strengthen our communities.”

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity awarded $13 million in grants to 30 recipients, including St. Augustine College – Aurora, to expand the talent pipeline of diverse candidates in construction and the building trades. Through the program, St. Augustine students with diverse backgrounds will have greater access and opportunities to excel in pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs.

BURBANK – The Illinois EPA announced a total of $90,000 in combined funds is coming to the cities of Berwyn and Summit to help identify service lines that may contain lead.

“The exposure to lead in drinking water poses a serious risk to our communities,” said State Senator Mike Porfirio (D-Burbank). “This new aid will ensure that residents will be protected against the harmful health risks that come with lead contamination.”

The Lead Service Line Replacement Notification Act establishes timelines and requirements for the removal and replacement of all lead service lines in Illinois and creates a low-income water assistance program to help fund financial assistance and water projects that include lead pipe replacement. The LSLI Grant Program utilizes a portion of Illinois EPA Public Water Supply Loan Program loan support funds generated from loan repayments.
