SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Doris Turner, alongside State Representative Mike Coffey, Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher and Sangamon County Board Chair Andy Van Meter unveiled an economic development plan for downtown Springfield Tuesday.
“Four units of government are working together in a bipartisan manner to provide economic tools that will finance and fund the development of a new hotel and the expansion of the Bank of Springfield Center,” said Turner (D-Springfield). “We all share the same vision – a thriving downtown that strengthens our capital city while supporting jobs, tourism and economic growth.”
Senate Bill 3499 would establish the Capital Area Tourism Authority as a political subdivision and unit of local government, allowing the authority to exercise certain economic development powers. Turner’s legislation aims to promote business, industry, commerce and tourism in Springfield, Sangamon County, and the state of Illinois.
“Springfield needs more hotel rooms and a larger, more modern venue if we want to attract new and premier conferences, shows and events,” said Coffey (R-Springfield). “Expanding the BOS Center and adding a connected headquarters hotel allows us to compete for opportunities that are currently out of reach and brings new energy and investment into downtown.”
The authority's board would consist of five members, with three members appointed by the Sangamon County Board, one member appointed by the Springfield City Council and one member appointed by the Springfield Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority.
“Tourism plays a major role in Springfield’s economy, and this project represents an important investment in our city’s future,” said Buscher. “A connected headquarters hotel and expanded BOS Center will attract more visitors, encourage longer stays and drive new activity downtown. That growth supports local businesses, creates jobs and helps ensure downtown Springfield continues to be a vibrant and welcoming destination.”
“This builds on the county’s recent work near the BOS Center and the transportation HUB coming soon to the area,” Van Meter said. “By strengthening downtown Springfield, we support a more resilient regional economy and create benefits that extend to communities across Sangamon County.”
Senate Bill 3499 will be heard in the Senate Revenue Committee on Thursday.
