As another 59 people died from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, Gov. JB Pritzker sought to remind everyone of the importance of social distancing, staying at home and wearing a protective mask, as reports spread of a large South Side house party that the governor said puts everyone at risk.
“You’re literally putting everyone around you in danger,” Pritzker said, when asked about a viral video circulating online showing dozens of people celebrating in a house, many not wearing masks and certainly no social distancing being practiced.
Pritzker reminded everyone that asymptomatic “spreaders” can infect numerous people before anyone shows signs of the disease. That’s the whole point of the stay-at-home order, social distancing requirement and recommendation for people to wear masks.
Pritzker said everyone at the party not only violated the state order, but also the trust of their friends and family that ultimately could be exposed.
The additional 59 deaths bring the state’s total to 1,933 lives lost since the outbreak began.
There were an additional 2,126 new cases reported over the past 24 hours, bringing the state’s total to 43,903.
Lab tests continue to come in at higher levels. In the past 24 hours, 13,335 lab results were reported. Only a week ago the number was less than half that. The governor and other officials have stressed that testing and test result capacity are key to figuring out when and how to go about re-opening the economy.
There are currently 4,595 people hospitalized with COVID-19 cases in Illinois, of which 1,267 are in Intensive Care Units, and of them, 772 are on ventilators.
Taking questions from the media, the governor was asked if he’d watched the Michael Jordan documentary and was looking forward to the new episodes.
“I have to admit I’m a little busy,” Pritzker said.
Pritzker was asked about comments by Trump’s former UN ambassador and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley that Illinois and other states don’t deserve any federal help because they have a history of debt and mismanagement.
Pritzker said he wants to know if the Republican members of congress from Illinois agree with her that Illinois shouldn’t get any relief.
