Gov. JB Pritzer said Tuesday he expects the courts to overturn the Clay County judge’s ruling that dealt a small immediate blow to Pritzker’s stay-at-home order but raised larger questions about what happens May 1.

He called the lawsuit “shameful” act by partisans “at a moment when political parties shouldn’t matter at all.”

IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike reported the highest single day death toll so far, at 144 additional deaths, bringing the state's total death toll to 2,125. She also reported 2,219 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, for a total of 48,102.

As for the legal action over Pritzker’s orders, at first glance, Monday’s ruling literally means the governor’s orders don’t apply to Republican state Rep. Darren Bailey, who filed the lawsuit. Pritzker hopes to have legal matters cleared up before the current order ends and the new, modified one begins May 1.

"As absurd as this charade is, we're taking this matter very seriously," the governor said. "While the court's order is limited the risk it poses is serious."

Pritzker went on to praise the work of the Illinois National Guard in several COVID-19-related missions, including drive-thru testing and standing up field hospitals. The Polish Consul General was also in attendance and spoke briefly about the cooperation between Illinois and Poland's military forces.
