SPRINGFIELD – To recognize and honor the history and legacy of Emmett Till, State Senator Lakesia Collins presented a resolution to honor July 25, 2025 as Emmett Till Day in the state of Illinois.
“It is important that we remember our history, and we remember the truth of what happened to Emmett Till,” said Collins (D-Chicago). “The courage of Mamie Till-Mobley should inspire all of us to work toward a better future for all Illinois residents as we remember their memory.”
Senate Joint Resolution 37 declares July 25, 2025 as Emmett Till Day in Illinois to recognize the life and legacy of Emmett Till and recognize the historical significance of his death in the struggle for civil rights in the United States.
Emmett Till was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago in Summit, IL. His story remains a painful but powerful part of Illinois’ legacy in the fight for racial justice.
At the young age of 14, Emmett Till was brutally abducted, tortured, and lynched in Mississippi after being accused of interacting with a white women, an event that shocked the conscience of the nation.
“The legacy of Emmett Till is one we have all fought for, and one that will continue to inspire generations to fight against racial injustice,” said Collins. “I am honored to recognize his legacy and proud to represent African American communities across Illinois as we mark Emmett Till Day as a day to remember our history and our truth as we work together to create a brighter future.”
Senate Joint Resolution 37 was adopted by the Senate on Wednesday.
