Senator Porfirio speaks on the Senate floor. SPRINGFIELD — According to a recent study, 25% of teachers use AI tools in the classroom. A bill sponsored by State Senator Mike Porfirio would provide assurance that students are learning from teachers, not AI.

“AI is a tool, not a teacher,” said Porfirio (D-Lyons Township). “Illinois must stay proactive when it comes to cutting-edge technology. This measure would protect the jobs of our teachers, and secure a legitimate education for our students.”

Senator PorfirioSPRINGFIELD — State Senator Mike Porfirio is leading a bill to help lower the risks of suicide among first responders who face disproportionate mental health struggles due to challenges they encounter on the job.

“Our first responders are heroes who face unique risks and traumatic experiences while they fight to protect their community,” said Porfirio (D-Lyons Township). “Maintaining a task force with members who are knowledgeable about experiences our first responders go through will help us understand how we can curb suicide risks among first responders.”

SPRINGFIELD — Thanks to a measure spearheaded by State Senator Mike Porfirio, firefighters could see increased safety while encountering severe smoke and unsteady terrain on roofs.

“I am honored to name this bill the Drew Price Act in honor of Andrew Price, a Chicago firefighter who gave his life protecting his community,” said Porfirio (D-Lyons Township). “This is an important first step we must take to protect our first responders on the job, as they defend us from danger every day.”

The bill would require a parapet or guard to be installed around light shafts, skylights and open courts on low-sloped roofs to aid firefighters traversing through dense smoke. Local municipalities would be required to complete surveys of roof safety and hazards of buildings in their district. The surveys would be shared with local police and fire departments to ensure they can avoid dangerous obstacles on roofs when called to an emergency.

Senator Porfirio

SPRINGFIELD — Veterans could receive expanded leave for health care visits thanks to a new bill sponsored by State Senator Mike Porfirio.

“Veterans across Illinois have earned and deserve the best medical care possible for their service and sacrifice,” said Porfirio (D-Lyons Township). “We must support our service members by empowering them to get the care and treatment they need.”

Porfirio’s proposed bill would guarantee veteran employees four days per year to receive medical care and treatment they need. Current law restricts visits to hospitals and clinics for examinations only. This bill would authorize veterans to receive care at any health care provider or facility. The bill also expands the acceptable reasons for leave to include treatment for medical conditions.

Porfirio Rooftop SafetySPRINGFIELD — A new initiative by State Senator Mike Porfirio could improve safety for thousands of first responders across Illinois, following the tragic passing of Andrew Price, a Chicago firefighter who fell through a light shaft while fearlessly suppressing a fire on the roof of a restaurant.

“First responders like Andrew risk their lives for us every day,” said Porfirio (D-Lyons Township). “We owe it to him and all those who serve us to take any steps we can to improve their safety.”

Porfirio’s proposed bill targets the risks firefighters face as they traverse roofs with light shafts, open courts and skylights. The bill would require roof openings to be covered or for a parapet to be built around them to increase their safety. The bill also would require local municipalities to complete a survey of buildings under their jurisdiction to share with local police and fire departments. Existing buildings with flat roof openings would be integrated over time and not require immediate modifications.

list of military benefitsSPRINGFIELD – Members of the National Guard and Reserve who are college or university students will soon be able to make up coursework they missed due to military obligations, thanks to a new law State Senator Mike Porfirio spearheaded through the General Assembly.

“This new law ensures our National Guard and Reserve members can fulfill their military duties without jeopardizing their academic progress,” said Porfirio (D-Lyons Township). “This is a vital step in supporting their dual commitment to both education and service.”

According to Student Veterans of America, around 16% of military students are members of the Reserve or National Guard. The new law ensures fair treatment for these students by requiring public colleges and universities in Illinois to enact policies allowing students to complete missed classwork and assignments if the reason for the student’s absence was to fulfill military obligations.
