State Senator Mike Porfirio on the Senate floorSPRINGFIELD – State Senator Mike Porfirio led a resolution to honor the U.S. Marine Corps through renaming a portion of Interstate Route 80.

“Since its creation, the Marine Corps has played a key role in protecting and safeguarding the security and freedom of the United States,” said Porfirio (D-Lyons Township). “This resolution enshrines the honor and dedication that our Marine Corps serve with into the state of Illinois. We will never forget the sacrifice our Marine Corps members have made and will continue to make in the name of freedom.”

House Joint Resolution 19 designates a portion of Interstate Route 80, from mile marker 26 to mile marker 51 – located in West Central Illinois and crossing through Rock Island County – as the U.S. Marine Corps Highway Semper Fidelis. Semper Fidelis, Latin for “always faithful,” is the motto of the United States Marine Corps.

Porfirio served on active duty in the U.S. Navy and is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He continues to serve as an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve.

House Joint Resolution 19 was adopted by the Senate on Saturday.
