State Senators Omar Aquino and Graciela Guzman speak at press conferencesSPRINGFIELD – Alongside Illinois families and advocates from the Economic Security Project, State Senators Omar Aquino and Graciela Guzmán rallied in support of affordability measures that would provide economic relief for families.

“The Child Tax Credit program has been a lifeline for working families, allowing them to afford essentials like child care, diapers and school supplies,” said Aquino (D-Chicago). “As the cost of living continues to rise, Illinois must invest in programs that ease the economic burden on working families.”

Among the initiatives supporters were advocating for is Aquino’s measure, Senate Bill 3567. The measure would expand the Child Tax Credit program by removing the current phase-in structure and address federal income restrictions, allowing more families to access the credit.

At the rally, advocates emphasized rising prices and increased financial strain on families amid federal economic policies and funding cuts to essential services that are stretching household budgets even thinner.

Advocates also rallied for Guzmán’s measure, Senate Bill 3756, which would provide guaranteed income payments to Medicaid-enrolled participants during late pregnancy and the first six months postpartum.

“NEST recognizes that if we want healthier babies, stronger families and a more sustainable Medicaid system, we have to support mothers when it matters most,” said Guzmán (D-Chicago). “NEST gives new mothers on Medicaid a $1,500 payment during their third trimester of pregnancy, followed by $500 a month for the first six months of their baby’s life. NEST isn’t just the right thing to do for our families – it saves the state Medicaid dollars.”
