SPRINGFIELD — Betting on the Oscars could soon be legal in Illinois under a new proposal from State Senator Sara Feigenholtz, opening the door for wagers on major entertainment awards alongside traditional sports betting.

“Cinema lovers, entertainment gurus and Oscar party-goers in my district are always looking for fun and creative opportunities to attract more visitors to our neighborhood bars,” said Feigenholtz (D-Chicago). “With Academy Awards betting, the possibilities are endless.”

Wagering on entertainment awards shows is gaining popularity nationwide, with seven states and Puerto Rico allowing betting on the industry. Ontario, Canada also permits wagering on entertainment shows.

With the 2026 award season underway, Feigenholtz is leading Senate Bill 2667 to capitalize on this growing popularity and to generate benefits for the state. The measure looks to establish a framework for sportsbook operators to allow Illinois residents to bet on entertainment awards shows like the Academy Awards. It would give the Illinois Gaming Board the ability to set rules for the betting. Under Feigenholtz’s proposal, Illinoisans would be able to place bets on the Emmy Awards, Grammy Awards, Academy Awards, Tony Awards and any other live competition or talent contests.

“The Oscars draws millions of viewers each year,” Feigenholtz added. “This is a creative concept that can capture both interest and dollars from these incredible showcases of talent.”

Senate Bill 2667 awaits a hearing in the Senate Executive Committee.
