Saturday event at Second Federal Self-Help Credit Union cancelled
CHICAGO – State Senator Celina Villanueva is joining with other local elected officials and businesses for a candy giveaway today, Friday, Oct. 30 in an effort to create a safer environment to distribute candy to children for the Halloween holiday.
A Little Village trick-or-treating event previously scheduled for Saturday at the Second Federal Self-Help Credit Union has been cancelled, and today’s candy giveaway is taking its place.
The giveaway will be held at New Life Church, 2701 S. Lawndale, from 3 to 5 p.m.
“Holidays are hard during this crisis,” Villanueva said. “We wanted to give area children a chance to get Halloween candy in a safer setting than traditional trick or treating.
Public health officials have put forward recommendations to help families who still choose to participate in trick or treating safe. They include:
• Don’t individually give out candy. Instead, reduce contact by placing candy on a table outside of your home or business, by the driveway, or somewhere else that allows for people to maintain a 6 ft. distance while picking up candy individually.
• Only trick or treat with members of your own household, and keep trick-or-treating groups to six people or less.
• Remember to wear appropriate face coverings. Halloween costume masks don’t provide adequate protection in most cases.
• Bring alcohol-based hand sanitizer with you when trick or treating, and use it frequently.
• Don’t consumer candy collected during trick-or-treating until after handwashing. As always, a parent/guardian should check all candy to make sure it is wrapped and should discard unwrapped candy.
• Indoor distribution of candy is highly discouraged.
