SPRINGFIELD – Members of the Illinois Senate Democratic Caucus celebrated the 55th annual Illinois Agriculture Legislative Day, highlighting the importance of supporting farmers and the state’s agricultural industry.

Illinois Ag Legislative Day is a long-standing tradition that allows Future Farmers of America members the opportunity to learn firsthand how to become strong advocates for the agriculture industry and agricultural education.

Additionally, these organizations provide baskets filled with agricultural products and specialty lunches for the legislators. These items serve as a reminder of the multiple facets agriculture touches in the lives of their constituents and the impacts their choices make on the industry.

"Our farmers are the backbone of our communities,” said State Senator Doris Turner (D-Springfield). “Ag Day is an opportunity to build partnerships with those who feed us, build our economy, and supply locally-sourced products throughout our communities. Prioritizing farmers, encouraging students to learn about agriculture and uplifting the industry that puts food on our tables is vital.”

Illinois Agriculture Legislative Day offers a platform for agricultural groups and organizations to discuss the impact the industry has on the state's economy and communities. This day gives stakeholders the opportunity to share with legislators the diverse challenges and opportunities facing the agricultural sector, while highlighting the role agri-businesses has in driving local economies and sustaining rural livelihoods.

Sen. Patrick Joyce

“Agriculture is the heart of Illinois and our entire country. From local family farms to large-scale ranches, these farmers are tasked with feeding their communities and taking care of the soil beneath them for generations to come,” said State Senator Patrick Joyce (D-Essex). “I have been a farmer since I was a little kid and it is something am I deeply proud of every Ag Day.”

Illinois has more than 900,000 people that work in the food and agriculture sectors. Senate Democrats remain committed to advancing policies that support the agricultural industry and local economies, as well as continue Illinois’ leadership in the agricultural sector.
