CHICAGO - State Senators Elgie R. Sims, Jr. and Robert Peters celebrated the announcement of a new National Quantum Algorithm Center, which will further solidify the state as a leader in the global quantum industry.

“Illinois is poised to become the epicenter of quantum innovation, positioning itself as a global leader in both technological advancement and economic development,” said Sims (D-Chicago). “The establishment of the National Quantum Algorithm Center marks a pivotal moment in our state's technological landscape, promising to drive breakthrough solutions to complex global challenges while also enhancing cutting-edge research and job opportunities.”

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity is providing a $25 million grant to the IQMP to purchase equipment for the IBM Quantum System Two at the facility.

This groundbreaking center is a huge step in making Illinois the global quantum capitol of the world by stimulating job growth, economic growth, innovation, research, technology advancement, and educational opportunities.

“This announcement cements Illinois’ position at the forefront of quantum innovation, showcasing the collaboration between our academic institutions, industry leaders like IBM, and the state’s strategic investments,” said Peters (D-Chicago). “The National Quantum Algorithm Center isn’t just about advancing technology – it’s about creating opportunity, driving economic growth and ensuring Illinois remains a global leader in tackling tomorrow’s challenges. Most importantly, it means investing in our communities by creating jobs, fostering local talent and building a stronger economy for everyone.”

Quantum computers are built to solve grand challenges society faces by creating specific algorithms to solve real world problems. Additionally, the center will incorporate collaborations from industry experts, academia, and the public sector.

The new Center will temporarily operate out of Discovery Partners Institute and the University of Chicago, and the IBM Quantum System Two will be located at Hyde Park Labs. The permanent home will be located on IQMP’s campus.

The announcement comes five months after PsiQuantum Corp. said it would invest more than $1 billion to become the anchor tenant at Pritzker’s quantum campus.

IQMP is projected to generate up to $20 billion in economic impact and create thousands of jobs.
