peters gillespie 101223SCHAUMBURG — In recognition of their work to improve health care access and quality for Illinois residents, the Illinois Primary Health Care Association honored State Senators Ann Gillespie and Robert Peters this month with the 2023 Community Health Center Champion award.

“Serving over a million Illinoisans annually, community health centers play a vital role in making quality health care accessible,” said Gillespie (D-Arlington Heights), who chairs the Senate Appropriations – Health and Human Services Committee. “Working to ensure our health care system supports both patients and providers has been one of my priorities as a senator, and it’s an honor to be recognized by IPHCA for these efforts.”

Gillespie has introduced legislation to expand access to behavioral health services at federally qualified health centers. This spring, Gillespie passed legislation establishing a state-based health insurance marketplace, which will help uninsured Illinoisans acquire the coverage they need. She was also instrumental in the historic passage of Illinois’ first rate review legislation that protects consumers and small businesses from unfair health insurance premium rate increases.

Peters backs measures that seek to support both hospitals and patients in a way that benefits the entire community. This past legislative session, Peters spearheaded a new law securing patient financial assistance for medical costs requiring hospitals to screen patients for financial assistance eligibility and exhaust all cost-reducing avenues. Additionally, he has been a fierce advocate for ensuring all Illinoisans have access to quality and affordable health care and attended the Budget for Families Rally this spring.

“As a state senator, I see it as my duty to do everything I can to help even the playing field when it comes to health care,” said Peters (D-Chicago). “I will continue to fight for proactive measures that empower healthy community outcomes for people regardless of their ZIP code. It is with great pride to be recognized alongside my colleagues for our commitment to the wellness of all people.”

IPHCA’s Community Health Center Champion award is presented annually to leaders who demonstrate support of community health centers and underserved populations.
