NORMAL – State Senator Dave Koehler joined Illinois State University leaders and state officials Monday to celebrate the opening of the university’s new College of Engineering facility.
“The opening of Illinois State University’s School of Engineering is an exciting investment in our students and the future of our workforce,” said Koehler (D-Peoria). “Expanding opportunities to pursue engineering at ISU will help grow the talent pipeline so more students call central Illinois home.”
Following years of planning by the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the ISU College of Engineering welcomed its first class of 168 students last fall, followed by more than 140 new students this fall. The new Campus East facility that opened this week spans 392,000 square feet across 28 acres and will support ISU’s growing engineering program, with capacity for up to 700 new students.
The Campus East facility features computer and circuit labs, collaborative research space, a wood and metal shop, a makerspace with 3D printers and a student success center. The facility is designed to give students opportunities for hands-on learning, research and collaboration as they prepare to enter the workforce.
