aldi closing 110821CHICAGO – Senator Patricia Van Pelt (D-Chicago) is outraged after the Aldi in West Garfield Park abruptly closed in October, and is worried about resident’s wellbeing in lieu of the West Side becoming a food desert.

“This closure is devastating to the community because a lot of people depended on this Aldi for convenient and affordable food,” Van Pelt said. “In particular, many older residents got their groceries from here. This is not just an affordability issue, but a mobility issue as well.”

In Chicago, more than 500,000 residents – most who are African-American – live in food deserts, while an additional 400,000 live in neighborhoods with an abundance of fast food restaurants and no grocery stores nearby.

vanpelt 100421CHICAGO – The first wave of Back to Business grants was awarded, with over half a million dollars going to businesses in the 5th District, State Senator Patricia Van Pelt (D-Chicago) announced.

Through the B2B program, $250 million in American Rescue Plan Act dollars are set aside for small businesses experiencing COVID-19 losses. The first wave granted more than $24 million to small businesses across the state. Eligible businesses can apply for the second wave by Oct. 13.

“I am happy that after experiencing so much loss, businesses will continue to have access to financial aid,” Van Pelt said. “I hope that all businesses will take the opportunity to apply for these grants, which can help their businesses get back to business as usual.”

So far, more than half of the grants have gone to minority-owned businesses. On average, recipients of B2B grants experienced revenue declines of 39% last year.

Businesses located within Disproportionately Impacted Areas will be prioritized, with more than $100 million in funds set aside for these zip codes. Businesses with revenues of $20 million or less in 2019 and a reduction in revenue in 2020 due to COVID-19 are eligible. The threshold is $35 million or less for hotels.

“I am happy to see that several Black and Brown businesses have benefitted from the first wave of B2B grants, including over $500,000 for businesses in the 5th District,” Van Pelt said. “I look forward the second wave of grants, and for more business to get much needed relief.”

Businesses may receive grants between the ranges of $5,000 to $150,000 to assist with losses experienced. Eligible businesses are encouraged to apply through Oct. 13, 2021 by visiting DCEO’s website.

birth center 082321CHICAGO – A measure led by State Senator Patricia Van Pelt (D-Chicago) to expand the amount of birthing center licenses in Illinois was signed into law Friday by Governor JB Pritzker.

“Tragically, 75 women die every year while pregnant or within a year of pregnancy,” Van Pelt said. “It is even more heartbreaking to know that four out of five pregnancy-related deaths could have been preventable. That is why this measure is so important – we must do everything we can to combat the issues of maternal mortality, including increasing birthing centers.”

“This is why we have hearings, to guide the legislation that impacts culture,” Van Pelt said. “There are still people awaiting answers as the DNA backlog decreases, and a commission is needed to improve coordination between police and forensic scientists to help further the decrease in the backlog.”

call4calm 080221SPRINGFIELD – The state’s Call4Calm text line to support Illinois residents' mental health needs is now permanent thanks to an initiative led by State Senator Patricia Van Pelt (D-Chicago).

“Due to the pandemic, mental health outcomes are more concerning than ever, and this text line is an essential outlet,” Van Pelt said. “Call4Calm can still benefit those who struggle with their mental health even after this pandemic is over, and must remain a mental health resource.”

Initially, Call4Calm was launched as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, serving as a remote patient monitoring program and support line available to anyone in the state.

vanpelt 041621SPRINGFIELD – Any person who has been convicted for a drug-related offense under state or federal law is currently prohibited from being eligible for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. State Senator Patricia Van Pelt (D-Chicago) led an initiative to reverse that, which was signed by the governor Friday.

“Even after people serve their time, they still struggle when reentering society, and have many rights continuously taken from them,” Van Pelt. “They are released and everything around them has changed, except their ability to fend for themselves has become harder due to their status.”

SPRINGFIELD – A measure championed by State Senator Patricia Van Pelt (D-Chicago) to create the Task Force on Best Practices and Licensing of Non-Transplant Organ Donation Organizations was signed into law Friday.

“When people sign up to be organ donors, they are putting their trust in the fact that their organs will be properly kept, and used for science or educational purposes. Unfortunately, there have been cases where family members of the deceased suspected foul play,” Van Pelt said. “There needs to be more regulations in place in order to ensure the safety of organ donations.”

In recent years, the FBI discovered that Biological Resource Center Inc. in states including Illinois, Michigan and Arizona had been misusing donated body parts in a gruesome and criminal manner.
