SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Laura Murphy is advancing legislation to provide consumers in Illinois with rights to their personal data online.
“Private companies should not have limitless control over the personal data of consumers, and should face consequences if they violate consumer privacy,” said Murphy (D-Des Plaines). “Consumers have a right to know what data is being collected and the steps they can take to limit the use of their data.”
Murphy’s Senate Bill 340 would create the Illinois Consumer Data Privacy Act, which would provide Illinois consumers with certain rights to their personal data. Under Senate Bill 340, consumers would have the option to opt out of having their data used for advertisements or sold to third parties.
Additionally, it would protect people from being subjected to algorithmic profiling that could influence major life decisions like loan approvals, job screenings or insurance rates. Senate Bill 340 would also prohibit the sale of a consumer’s most sensitive data, without requiring a consumer to opt of the sale.
“Protecting our consumers is a priority for us in Illinois,” said Murphy. “This legislation would increase transparency for residents so they know what data companies have, and have the option to opt out.”
Senate Bill 340 passed the Senate Executive Committee on Wednesday.
