Harmon: Budget keeps Illinois on path to stability

harmon 040119SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) issued the following statement today after Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law legislation setting fair tax rates:

“We took another step today toward updating our tax structure and enacting reform that will benefit middle-class and working Illinoisans.

“Our current tax system is one of the most unfair in the country. Lower-income and middle-class families shoulder a much greater burden than those making the most.

“This plan will provide tax relief to 97 percent of earners while asking only the top 3 percent of earners to pay more. It will generate the revenue necessary to seriously tackle our backlog of bills. Beyond that, it will give us the flexibility needed to respond to economic downturns and turn our attention to issues like property tax reform.”

Senate Bill 687 takes effect only if 60 percent of voters approve the fair tax constitutional amendment in November 2020.
