Senator Fine applauds action on legislation protecting immigrant communities

fine 032819SPRINGFIELD – Several pieces of legislation designed to protect Illinois immigrant families were signed into law today by Gov. JB Pritzker.

State Senator Laura Fine (D-Glenview) issued the following statement:

“These pieces of legislation send a message to immigrant families that Illinois is a welcoming and supportive state. I applaud the sponsors of these measures for their dedication and compassion and I thank the governor for making this a priority.”

The legislation signed included:

  • HB 2691 – RISE act: Provides access to financial aid for undocumented students and other groups that often have difficulty accessing these resources.
  • HB 2040 – Private Detention Facility Moratorium Act: Bars state and local governments from entering into contacts for private detention centers.
  • HB 1637 – Keep Illinois Families Together Act: Bars agreements that deputize local police officers into ICE.
