Delgado: Puerto Rico Supreme Court rules in favor of teachers’ pensions

Delgado PRpensions2014Recently, the Supreme Court in Puerto Rico has been facing issues similar to those we are seeing in Illinois, its legislature voted to cut teacher pensions.

Today, State Senator William Delgado (D-Chicago), Chairman of the Illinois Senate Education Committee, was informed that Puerto Rico’s Supreme Court ruled that the reduction of teachers’ benefits is unconstitutional.

“I hope that we can learn something from this. I believe what we are trying to do here, to reduce the pension benefits of teachers is also unconstitutional,” said Delgado. “I congratulate the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico for defending the rights and upholding the benefits of the teachers.”
