Parks Day in Illinois

Parks DayToday is Parks Day in Illinois! Each year, the Illinois Association of Park Districts hosts a day of action at the Capitol along with nearly 50 park districts, forest preserves, conservation, and recreation agencies to provide lawmakers with information about the services they offer to thousands of Illinoisans every day. These services include child care, health and wellness initiatives, recreational facilities, and education.

This is the 18th Annual Parks Day that the Illinois Association of Park Districts has organized. This year’s theme is “Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development – A Legacy for Future Generations”. Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) is a program funded by state grants and local funds to provide assistance to communities looking to develop land into parks and green spaces. Exhibitors emphasize OSLAD’s local fund-matching to state lawmakers so that the program can be considered for future grants.

“Park, recreation, and conservations agencies have a tremendous, positive impact on health and wellness; they help to grow the economy, and they create a better quality of life for the citizens of Illinois,” said Peter Murphy, President of the Illinois Association of Park Districts.

State Senators from every part of Illinois stopped by their local park districts to hear about the services they provide to their districts.
