State Senator Iris Y. Martinez (D-Chicago) led her colleagues today in celebrating Elderly Women of Wisdom Day in Illinois. March 27 has been designated to honor all women residing in skilled nursing facilities for their lifelong service to their families and communities.

wow group 032719Women living in nursing homes are among our oldest Illinoisans of every race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status and have contributed greatly to our communities through their passion, ingenuity, and tireless determination. In their lifetimes, they have broken through the glass ceiling, served in the military to preserve freedom, and fought for the rights of women and children to live free from violence. They have marched on the Chicago lakefront and the streets of Springfield as they worked tirelessly to ratify the ERA in Illinois. Many struggled to raise their children, earning only 59 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts.

Senators honoring the occasion wore pins with photos of some of the women whose stories were shared on the Senate floor today.

Elderly Women of Wisdom Day is an initiative of the Health Care Council of Illinois, a nursing home community advocacy group, to bring their residents into the celebration of Women's History Month.
