Hutchinson leads Senate in requiring insurance coverage for contraceptives

bcpillsSPRINGFIELD – With 98 percent of American women using birth control at some point in their lives, having easy access to the myriad forms of contraceptives available is an important part of the health care delivery system for women.

“Women utilize contraceptives for many different reasons. The most obvious reason is for birth control,” State Senator Toi Hutchinson (D – Chicago Heights) said. “But for many women, contraceptives play a key role in our overall health. Government should ensure that women have access to all forms of contraceptives without intrusion by insurance bureaucrats or politicians.”

Addressing these concerns, Hutchinson led the Senate in passing a proposal this afternoon that would require insurance companies in Illinois provide coverage for almost all FDA-approved contraceptive drugs, devices and products. Her plan would also require insurance companies to provide up to 12 months of contraceptives at one time.

Current law only requires insurance companies cover at least one contraceptive in each drug class, leaving out a host of medical options for the many women who must try multiple forms of birth control before finding the right fit.

“We have worked with many women who spent months fighting with insurance companies to get coverage for the birth control method prescribed by their doctor,” said Kathy Waligora, Director of the Health Reform Initiative at EverThrive Illinois. “This bill provides a common sense solution which will have an immediate, positive impact on the lives of women across the state, while decreasing the rate of unintended pregnancy and improving the health of moms and babies.”

House Bill 5576 passed the Senate this afternoon on a 35-22 vote and now heads to the governor for his approval.
