Hutchinson, McConnaughay bring attention to human trafficking (VIDEO)

Hutchinson, McConnaughay, bring attention to human trafficking (VIDEO)Senator Toi Hutchinson (D – Chicago Heights) joined Senator Karen McConnaughay (R – St. Charles) and organizations from across the state who work to eradicate human trafficking at a ceremony earlier this week in the Capitol.

“Human trafficking is a form of modern slavery that primarily exploits young women by forcing them into involuntary servitude and prostitution,” Hutchinson said. “It’s all too easy to think of this as an abstract, global problem, but the truth is that this is happening in our own backyards. It’s unacceptable, and it’s time to speak up.”

Hutchinson and McConnaughay hosted the event that brought together numerous organizations that work to fight against human trafficking in Illinois. The groups were recognized for being on the front lines in protecting women and men from exploitation and abuse.

“Human trafficking exists and festers in the shadows, where it destroys innocent lives every day,” McConnaughay said. “Sometimes the best way to fight back is by shining a light.”
