Senator Haine fights to keep U.S. Steel open in Granite City (AUDIO)

haine-steel-mrSteelworkers filled the Senate gallery this week to watch the debate and passage of Senator William Haine’s (D-Alton) Senate resolution urging the President of the United States and Congress to review the national tariff policy on steel goods.

In March, U.S. Steel announced it would idle its Granite City plant leading to the layoff of more than 2,000 employees. Haine's forceful support of the importance of steel to the American economy drew applause and cheers from the steelworkers watching.

“The United States steel industry is suffering as a whole right now. I am asking the President and Congress to carefully review the national tariff policy on steel goods. Steel has been an integral part of our country and we must not let foreign imports trump US-made steel,” said Haine. “The Granite City plant has been in the area for generations and is a key employer in the region. Seeing it close would be catastrophic and would have devastating effects to the families of all those employed there, as well as Granite City and the Metro-East.”

Excerpt from Senator Haine’s impassioned floor speech on May 5 discussing Senate Resolution 254:

Senate Resolution 254 passed the Senate and a copy will be presented to the President of the United States, vice-president, the majority and minority leaders of the U.S. Senate and the speaker and minority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives.
