Remembering our firefighters and honoring heroic acts (VIDEO)

FirefighterMemorial2015Firefighters from across the state gathered at the State Capitol in Springfield for the annual Illinois Firefighters Memorial and Medal of Honor Ceremony.

“It reminds us of the valor and the utter, complete dedication to duty of our firefighters.” Senator Bill Haine (D-Alton) said. “Every day we go to sleep, we go to work and we depend on them to protect us.”

Fortunately, 2014 saw no line of duty deaths for Illinois firefighters.

“What an honor it is to be out here with our elected officials, our brothers and sisters in the fire service, and members of the community to recognize those who’ve lost their lives protecting the community and also those who’ve performed heroic acts saving others throughout communities across Illinois,” Pat Devaney, president of the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois, said.

Haine filed a resolution in the Senate to designate May 14 as Statewide Police, Firefighter and First Responder Appreciation Day in Illinois and urged all Illinoisans to recognize and honor those whose unwavering commitment to public safety has earned them our great esteem and admiration.
