Illinois Legislative Black Caucus urges Governor Rauner to sign comprehensive law enforcement reform package (VIDEO)

blackcaucus-53015The recent string of officer involved deaths prompted legislative leaders in the Black Caucus to address the concerns of both law enforcement and the communities they affect. State Senator Kwame Raoul (D - Chicago) passed Senate Bill 1304, which makes provisions for body cameras, independent investigators in officer-related deaths, special prosecutors and cultural competency training.

Illinois will be the first state in the nation to pass a comprehensive package of recommendations put forth by President Barack Obama’s police task force.

The package sets standards for body cameras, prohibits chokeholds, independent investigations of officer-involved shootings and officer training. Black Caucus members spoke of the role statistical studies on traffic stops play in this effort.

The Illinois Legislative Black Caucus held a press conference Saturday to urge Governor Rauner to sign this measure so Illinois can start the process of implementing the provisions in the legislation to ensure law enforcement and public safety.
