SPRINGFIELD —State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton spearheaded a measure through the Senate to ensure law enforcement officers and firefighters can park their work vehicles at home without being subjected to homeowners' or condominium association restrictions.
“Law enforcement officers and firefighters should not face penalties from their HOA for parking a vehicle at their home," said Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs). "It’s important that we address unreasonable restrictions put on our first responders."

SPRINGFIELD – In the face of fierce debate on the role of speech and protest on college campuses, and the federal government moving to influence university curriculum, State Senator Mike Halpin has pushed forward a bill to secure the rights of students, faculty and higher education institutions.
“We cannot allow pressures from the federal government or cynical political groups to suppress speech, free assembly and learning on our campuses,” said Halpin (D-Rock Island). “Higher education institutions serve the role of building knowledge and understanding of one another and teaching our young people how to tackle new ideas and skills. We need to protect the rights of students and faculty to ensure a safe, just and open learning environment for everyone.”
House Bill 4304 would protect the constitutional rights of students in higher education institutions and spell out further academic rights. These rights would include an inclusive and safe learning environment, accessibility, free expression and academic access, freedom of association and organization, peaceful protest, academic transparency, fair evaluation, educational records, protection of academic programs from political interference, career preparation, educational quality, due process, institutional accountability, financial transparency, refunds and withdrawals and right to transfer.

SPRINGFIELD ─ State Senator Ram Villivalam is leading the charge in tackling the mental health crisis thanks to a new measure that would ensure mental health support for educational staff.
“The mental health crisis continues to affect people every day,” said Villivalam (D-Chicago). “Currently, educational staff do not have the mental health support or resources needed to get the care they deserve – and now it’s up to us to help break down these barriers so they can access care.”
To provide mental health support to education staff, House Bill 4862 would require each school board to develop a staff mental health support procedure. The procedure would be required to include a commitment to supporting employee mental health in the workplace, opportunities to provide feedback on employee mental health, annual communication with information on resources and support available to staff, and opportunities for the school board to receive information regarding employee mental health initiatives and programs.
