Bennett congratulates Schlarman Academy Basketball Team on state championshipSPRINGFIELD – State Senator Scott Bennett (D-Champaign) welcomed the players and coaching staff of the Schlarman Academy girls’ basketball team to the Illinois Capitol today to recognize their second consecutive state title.

    Bennett was joined on the Senate floor by the players and Head Coach Keith Peoples as he presented the team with a special tribute honoring their accomplishment.

    “Two consecutive championships is an outstanding achievement,” Bennett said. “I am honored to recognize these incredible young women who have put in a tremendous amount of hard work this season on and off the court. They have not only played hard, but they have represented Danville and Vermilion County with dignity and respect, and have raised the bar for future teams.”

  • Clayborne welcomes state champion Belleville Township – West Maroons to state capitolSPRINGFIELD – The mighty Maroons of Belleville Township High School – West boys’ basketball team joined State Senator James F. Clayborne, Jr. (D-Belleville) at the state capitol today to honor their recent 4A State Championship.

    The Maroons triumphed over the Dolphins of Whitney Young Magnet High School (Chicago) in overtime at Carver Arena in Peoria last month, giving Belleville West their first state championship in program history.

    Senator Clayborne, the senate’s Majority Leader, was proud to welcome the students, saying their victory was a huge win for them and the entire Metro East.

  • Sen. Scott Bennett with the Schlarman Academy girls’ basketball team, Class 1A State ChampsSPRINGFIELD – State Senator Scott Bennett (D-Champaign) welcomed the much-accomplished Schlarman Academy girls’ basketball team to the Illinois State Capitol today.

    Last month, The Lady Hilltoppers dominated the Class 1A state title game, easily defeating Stockton 53-31 to claim the program and Danville’s first-ever state championship.

    Their win capped a magical 33-1 season for Schlarman as the Hilltoppers ended the season on a 19-game win streak.
