Bertino-Tarrant urges governor to sign legislative pay freeze

wagefreezePLAINFIELD — Members of the Illinois General Assembly would not receive an automatic increase in mileage reimbursements or per diem rates due to a measure that passed the General Assembly during the spring legislative session with bipartisan support.

“Legislators should be ensuring that the government is prioritizing the necessary resources to social service providers and schools,” State Senator Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant (D-Shorewood) said.  "Since I have been in office, I have voted to halt any increases in my salary."

jjc cityclub070617Senate President John Cullerton spoke at the City Club's breakfast this morning. Here are his prepared remarks, after which he answered reporters' questions:

Good morning.

Thank you for the opportunity to be here. I always look forward to talking to this group.

I’m pleased to finally have something to talk about in regards to our budget.

But before I put everyone to sleep with a long discussion of budget numbers, I want to begin with some audience participation.

Cullerton cites Radogno's cooperation, professionalism

jjc cr CST 0117SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois Senate President John J. Cullerton issued the following statement regarding the pending retirement of his colleague and friend Republican Leader Christine Radogno.

She and I began as Senate leaders on the same day. We started our relationship in those roles by voting for each other. We then turned our attention to the impeachment trial. We followed that up with a long-overdue, bipartisan agreement on investing in roads, bridges, schools and other infrastructure.

Budget crisis creates challenges for Chicago healthcare provider

Omar Aquino, a Chicago Democrat, emphasized the importance of a balanced, full-year budget in bringing stability and certainty to community healthcare providers in his district and across Illinois. Aquino pointed to the toll that the budget crisis has already taken on Erie Family Health Center, a Chicago safety net healthcare provider that has been forced to work through a wide variety of issues over the last two years.

“I am glad to hear that there is some bipartisan cooperation in state government as we work toward passing a budget,” Aquino said, referring to ongoing negotiations in the Illinois General Assembly.
