Legislators, staff and lobbyists paired their session suits with sneakers on Thursday as the Senate once again participated in the Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers challenge.
The Coaches vs. Cancer program started over twenty years ago as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches and brings attention to the pervasiveness and effects of cancer.
Since that time, many organizations have joined the campaign, raising cancer awareness, and in some cases, funds for research.
Advocates held a rally with legislators in front of the Lincoln Statue to discuss the importance of cancer awareness.
“Cancer remains a major health concern in Illinois,” said Rhonda Pour with the American Cancer Society. “This year, in Illinois alone, 66,840 people will be diagnosed with cancer; 24,000 will actually lose their battle with the disease. We have gathered here today at the Capitol to work with legislators to change that.”
