Affordable care available now to Illinoisans through ACA open enrollment

il-aca-openenroll-2014Beginning mid-November and through Feb. 15, 2015, Illinoisans may sign up for health insurance through the Get Covered Illinois insurance exchange. Under the Affordable Care Act, residents who don’t have health benefits through an employer can use the exchange to find a plan. Many are eligible for federal subsidies, and eligible low-income individuals can also enroll in Medicaid through Get Covered Illinois.

The November-through-February open enrollment period is for individuals and families who haven’t purchased insurance through the exchange and those already enrolled and want to switch plans.

This year, additional carriers and plans are available, so participants may find a plan now that is more affordable or better suits their needs. Could you use some in-person help? Check the Get Covered Illinois website for enrollment events and other assistance in your area.

Last year, 217,000 Illinois residents enrolled in insurance plans through Get Covered Illinois, and 77 percent received federal subsidies to help with their premiums. An additional 468,000 signed up for Medicaid, exceeding an earlier estimate of 342,000 new clients. The federal government fully reimburses Illinois for eligible health services costs for those newly eligible for Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Last year’s successful roll out is easing the burden on hospitals, clinics and other health care providers that previously treated the low-income uninsured without compensation. Routine, coordinated care for those now receiving medical assistance is also expected to result in improved health for low-income residents and fewer emergency room visits.
