School funding reform advocates rally at the Capitol (VIDEO)

Supporters of a proposal to reform the way schools are funded rallied yesterday at the State Capitol, as Senator Andy Manar’s plan to fundamentally change Illinois’ school funding formula makes its way through the House.

Senator Manar addressed the hundreds of teachers, parents and students who attended the rally.

“A quality education for every child makes our entire state a better place to live – that is what Senate Bill 16 is about,” Manar said. “If we are going to address poverty in the State of Illinois, we have to address it through our public education system once and for all.”

Manar’s proposal would change the funding formula for public education to require the state to make 92 percent of public school funding need based. The current system only distributes 44 cents for every $1 invested in education on the basis of district need.

Senate Bill 16 passed the Senate in May on a bipartisan vote and is currently being considered in the Illinois House.
