In memory of our friend George Shadid

shadid blogSenator George Shadid was born on May 15, 1939 in Clinton, IA to a family of proud Lebanese descent. He married his wife Lorraine Unes in 1953. George and Lorraine had two sons, James and George, Jr. the latter of whom preceded him in death. His son James is currently a federal judge in Peoria. He is survived by his wife Lorraine, his son Jim, his daughter-in-law Mikie and four grandchildren

Senator Shadid started his career in public service as an officer in the Peoria Police Department. By 1976, he had risen to the rank of Lieutenant when he ran for Peoria County Sherriff. He was elected County Sherriff that year, the first Democrat elected sheriff since the 1800s. Senator Shadid served as County Sheriff from 1976 to 1993.

ShadidIn 1993, Shadid was appointed to the Senate for the 46th district to replace Senator Richard Luft who had been appointed Illinois Commissioner of the Illinois Department of Banks and Trusts. Senator Shadid served from 1993 to 2006, serving as seat mate to future President Barack Obama for most of that time. Shadid and Obama became lifelong friends during their time in the Senate.
