School funding formula top priority for Manar, Senate Dems

manar-hutchinson-edState Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) continues his efforts to overhaul the state's outdated public school funding system. He's traveled the state over the past year listening to supporters and critics in an effort to put together the best plan for all Illinois students. That new plan centers on the state providing funding to schools based on their needs.

To reflect education's standing as the top priority for Senate Democrats, the first piece of legislation in the Senate -- Senate Bill 1 -- will carry Manar's reform efforts.

"Everybody ... knows our formula's broken. That sets us on a path to fixing it," Manar said in a recent interview with the Associated Press.

The reintroduced legislation contains the same measures as last year’s proposal to shift state education funding to a need-based model, plus some updates.

According to the Associated Press story, the State Board of Education hasn't done the math yet for the adjusted funding details.
