Delgado, Children’s Place rejoice over success of facility and students

delgado childrens gradCHICAGO- After cuts proposed by the governor earlier this year threatened to shut down a majority of its operations The Children’s Place Association, a pre-K education facility, spent Thursday morning celebrating. State Senator William Delgado (D-Chicago) was in attendance as the facility and staff held a ceremony for their students’ graduation, as some of them will move up to Kindergarten.

Children’s Place provides a wide variety of services to over 70 children a day. Most of whom come from low income families affected by debilitating diseases and disabilities including autism, HIV, heart ailments, epilepsy, spina bifida and hydrocephalus. For many of the children, this is the only early education facility they can attend due to their illness.

“I could not imagine what would compel the governor to think that cutting funding to Children’s Place was a good idea,” said Delgado. “If he took the time to visit them and experience their culture for just a day, he would understand that those cuts were just heartless.”

Delgado attended Children’s Place’s graduation on Thursday morning to congratulate the children and the directors on their success. Earlier in the year, Delgado organized a press conference to announce that his colleagues in the Illinois House and Senate would fight to oppose the cuts that the governor had proposed.

“These children should be so proud of themselves, I’m thrilled to see them move on to the next step of their education,” Delgado said. “When I stood there with my colleagues in March and announced that we were going to fight to help the Children’s Place and their students succeed, that was a promise. I’m here today to follow through with my promise and to show Cathy that we’re still here for them.”

“We are proud that, despite the health and other challenges these children face, for the past four years 100% of graduating children were fully prepared for kindergarten and school,” said Cathy Krieger, CEO of Children’s Place. “We help the most vulnerable, highest risk preschool children in the State of Illinois. They should not have to suffer because of budget issues they did not create.”
