Bush shows support for child care providers

Bush shows support for child care providersAs the budget impasse continues, child care providers have been left to wonder whether the state aid that they rely on to operate will be available when they need it. Governor Rauner has repeatedly targeted the Child Care Assistance Program for cuts under his budget proposals, and with the absence of a budget the funding for the program is still uncertain.

State Senator Melinda Bush decided to visit Dortha Rivers, who has been a child care provider for 21 years, to see what exactly is at stake for her. Rivers lives in Zion and operates an at home child care center that serves a variety of children. Senator Bush had the opportunity to read and play with the children as well as observe what a day in the life of a home child care provider is like.

"Day care providers like Dortha Rivers are beyond important for young working families with children,” Bush said. “Affordable day care allows these families the flexibility to work long hours to provide for their children while simultaneously keeping them safe and healthy. Without these services, parents would have nowhere to turn."

Senator Bush concluded the day by signing a pledge to protect child care and home health care providers all over the state.
