Spring takes senators to districts for local events


Your lawmakers are working when they are at the Capitol in Springfield on session days. They are also working when not in Springfield. For two weeks in April between session weeks, State Senate Dems were meeting with hundreds of constituents at a variety of events in their districts: job fairs, informative workshops, town halls, and visits to schools, senior centers, and many other local sites to hear from you. Here is a sample of those events.  


April 23, Lake Point Marina (Winthrop Harbor, IL)

Sen. Melinda Bush attended groundbreaking for Illinois Beach State Park. About 30 people attended, along with representatives of Capital Development Board, DNR, Sierra Club, local union leaders and environmental activists. Full story here


April 22 - Senator Tom Cullerton greeted about 60 attendees at a Senior Fair in Glendale Heights. Watch video from the event here 

Sen. Cullerton also held Capitol on Your Corner constituent meetings April 21, 23 and 24 in Bartlett, Carol Stream and Bloomingdale.

April 24 - Senator William Delgado spoke to classes at Horizon Science Academy Belmont.  The senator spoke to each of the six grades in the first-year elementary school. The school’s “Trash to Treasure” program, where students turn everyday garbage into something new, useful and inventive was a point of special interest with the senator. 


April 22, Thornton Township Building - Senator Napoleon Harris, III hosted an IDES Unemployment Insurance Workshop with the Southland Chamber of Commerce, small Business Advisory Council and South Holland Business Association. About 25 people attended.

April 23, Harvey - Sen. Harris hosted a Fraud & Foreclosure Workshop. Lizveth Mendez, Outreach Liaison with the Attorney General's office, spoke to about 20 constituents about financial security issues.



April 24, Kankakee - Senator Toi Hutchinson held a Hiring Fair connecting those looking for work with over 50 hiring employers. The event was held at the Kankakee Valley Park Districts Recreation Center in downtown Kankakee and drew nearly 400 job seekers.

 Jones-rempl-pic April 25, Chicago - Senator Emil Jones, III hosted a Re-Employment Workshop at his district office. Services geared toward those seeking to re-enter the workplace after long-term unemployment were provided.

April 27, Chicago - Senator Kimberly A. Lightford hosted her fifth annual Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Celebration. Senator Lightford also provided information about important state services for seniors and talked with attendees about important issues with agencies including the Illinois Department on Aging and the Illinois Attorney General's Office. http://www.senatorlightford.com/index.php/news/42-news-releases/176-lightford-honors-grandparents-raising-grandchildren


April 22, 23, 24 - Senator Pat McGuire held Town Hall meetings in Bolingbrook, Romeoville and Joliet to meet constituents and talk about the status of issues including pension reform, fair tax, budget projections, education funding, jobs and the local economy.


 Manar-CYC-April April 15 - Senator Andy Manar hosted a Capitol on Your Corner (CYC) town hall meeting in Niantic. Topics included education reform, the need for a road construction bill, the State budget, how to tackle the challenges of small towns, involving youth and more.
 Noland-financialwkshp April 15, Elgin - Senator Michael Noland and the Illinois State Treasurer's Office hosted "Smart Money," a Financial Literacy class at Gail Borden Public Library.
