Senator Emil Jones III Bio

State Senator Emil Jones III is currently serving his first term representing the south Chicago and suburban area.  The son of former Illinois Senate President Emil Jones, Jr., Emil Jones III has worked to create a name for himself in the Illinois Senate and is often recognized for his effective leadership and steadfast commitment to the people of the 14th Legislative district.

A strong proponent of education reform, this year Jones III supported a plan that would have increased education funding, supplied property tax relief to families, and allowed the state to pay down its pension debt.  He has also worked to increase grants to early childhood programs.  To assist high school dropouts, Jones III sponsored legislation designed to re-enroll these students.  The Illinois Hope and Opportunity Pathways through Education (IHOPE) program will offer classes to students who have dropped out of high school, giving them a second chance to earn a high school diploma.

With an economic development background, Jones III sponsored legislation to promote smart and green growth by giving businesses who refurbish vacant buildings interest-free loans.

An outspoken voice for increased public safety standards, Jones III has worked to make Illinois’ neighborhood streets safer by passing legislation aimed at reducing gang recruitment.  He also championed legislation to clearly define the act of stalking and cyber stalking, bringing criminal stalking statutes into the 21st century by acknowledging that stalkers have the ability to use technology to further harass their victims. The measure also imposes stricter punishment on those who violate the law.

Senator Jones grew up in Palos Heights.  Prior to his career in the Illinois Senate, he served as a member of the Advisory Board of the Division Street Business Development Association.  He is also a former Administrator at the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
